Germany

Modern Sovereign Republics

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in Western and Central Europe, bordered by Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1949, after World War II and Allied occupation, Germany was organised into two separate polities with limited sovereignty, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the west and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the east. After the fall of the communist-led government in East Germany, German reunification saw the former East German states join the FRG on 3 October 1990. The lead names two real founding-adjacent dates for the current state: 1949, when the Federal Republic of Germany was established (the entity this atlas's German Empire, Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany polities all precede), and 3 October 1990, when the former East German states joined the FRG in reunification, giving Germany its present form and borders. Recorded here as 1949 with 1990 named as the alternate rather than silently dropped.
