The Easter Rising was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week, fought from 24 to 29 April 1916. It was launched by Irish republicans seeking to end British rule and establish an independent Irish Republic while the United Kingdom was occupied fighting the First World War. The rebellion was suppressed within days, and sixteen of its leaders were subsequently executed by the British authorities.
