The Dersim massacre, also known as the Dersim genocide, was carried out by the Turkish military over the course of three operations against Kurdish rebels of the Alevi faith and civilians in the Dersim Province, later renamed Tunceli. The operations ran from May 1937 to September 1938, and estimates of the death toll vary widely, from roughly 13,800 to as many as 70,000.
