Georges Clemenceau was a French statesman who served twice as prime minister of France, from 1906 to 1909 and again from 1917 to 1920. Originally a physician and later a prominent radical journalist and politician of the Third Republic, he led France through the final, decisive years of the First World War and played a central role at the Paris Peace Conference, where he negotiated the Treaty of Versailles and pressed for strict reparations and security guarantees against Germany. Known by the nicknames Pere la Victoire (Father Victory) and The Tiger, he also championed the restitution of Alsace-Lorraine to France.
