The Whiskey Rebellion, also known as the Whiskey Insurrection, was a violent tax protest in the United States that began in 1791 and continued until 1794, during the presidency of George Washington. It arose from resistance among farmers and distillers on the western frontier to a federal excise tax on whiskey. Washington personally led a militia force to suppress the uprising, an early demonstration of the new federal government's authority to enforce its own laws.
