The Haitian Revolution, also known as the Haitian War of Independence, was a successful insurrection by enslaved Africans against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, the colony that became the sovereign state of Haiti. It ran from 1791 to 1804 and is one of the only known slave rebellions in human history to lead to the founding of a state that was both free of slavery and ruled by former captives.
