The Tugendhat family's life in the villa Mies van der Rohe built for them lasted less than eight years. As Jews facing Nazi persecution, Fritz Tugendhat and his family fled Czechoslovakia in May 1938, going first to Switzerland and then, in January 1941, on to Venezuela, where two more of the couple's daughters were born in Caracas. The property they left behind in Brno did not wait quietly for their return. The villa was seized by the Gestapo and later nationalized outright by the postwar Czechoslovak state, passing entirely out of the family's hands and into decades of institutional use, at various points serving purposes that had nothing to do with the house Mies had designed as a private residence. What distinguishes Fritz Tugendhat's own relationship to that loss from his wife's is a matter of simple biography: unlike Greta, who returned to Brno twice in the late 1960s, once to deliver a lecture on the house's history, Fritz never visited the villa again after the family's 1938 departure. He died in 1958, in exile, having spent the last two decades of his life in Switzerland and then Venezuela rather than in the house his father-in-law had built for him and Greta at the start of their marriage. The asymmetry between the two Tugendhats' later relationships to the villa, Greta returning to reclaim its history in person, Fritz never setting foot in it again, is not explained anywhere in the sources checked, and the atlas records it as exactly that: an open asymmetry in an otherwise well-documented story, rather than a gap papered over with a guess at what kept him away.
