If the British Empire never had a single founding moment, it also never had a single closing one, and historians disagree, reasonably, about which milestone deserves to stand for the whole slow retreat. Indian and Pakistani independence in August 1947 is the candidate most often cited as the decisive break, the loss of what had long been called the jewel in the crown, and it triggered a rapid wave of decolonization across South and Southeast Asia and, over the following two decades, across most of Britain's African territories, as Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and dozens of others gained independence through the 1950s and 1960s, sometimes through negotiation and sometimes, as in Kenya's Mau Mau uprising or the Malayan Emergency, through violent counter-insurgency campaigns Britain fought and eventually abandoned. The 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China is the conventional symbolic endpoint many popular histories reach for, a fittingly televised final lowering of the flag over one of the last major colonial possessions, but it is symbolic rather than definitive: Britain still governs fourteen British Overseas Territories today, from Gibraltar to the Falkland Islands to Bermuda, some of which have shown little interest in independence at all. Encyclopaedia Britannica's treatment of the Empire's decline is careful on this point, decolonization was a decades-long, territory-by-territory process shaped by local nationalist movements, Cold War pressure, and Britain's own postwar economic exhaustion, not a scheduled withdrawal with a fixed closing date.
