The interwar period ran from the Armistice ending the First World War on 11 November 1918 to the outbreak of the Second World War on 1 September 1939. It saw sweeping social, political, military and economic change: the collapse of the German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian and Ottoman empires and the new states that replaced them, the founding of the League of Nations as an experiment in collective security, the instability and hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic, the Great Depression that began in 1929, and the rise of fascist and authoritarian movements across Europe that led directly into the next war.
