The Carolingian Empire was a Frankish dominated empire in Western and Central Europe during the Early Middle Ages, governed by the Carolingian dynasty, which had controlled the Frankish kingdoms from 751 and ruled the Lombard kingdom from 774. The empire is dated from 800, when Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Roman emperor in return for political protection, disregarding the rival claims of the weakened Byzantine Empire, and it is sometimes considered the first phase in the history of the Holy Roman Empire. Following Charlemagne's death the realm fragmented through civil war between 840 and 843, eventually dividing into autonomous kingdoms despite the nominal recognition of a single emperor.
