Louis II of Italy

Louis II, sometimes called the Younger, was King of Italy and emperor of the Carolingian Empire from 844, co-ruling with his father Lothair I until 855 and then ruling alone until his death in 875. He generally used the title august emperor, but adopted emperor of the Romans after conquering Bari in 871, a step that strained relations with the Byzantine Empire, whose court instead called him emperor of Francia. The chronicler Andreas of Bergamo, the principal source for his activity in southern Italy, wrote that a great tribulation came upon Italy after his death.
