The Heian Period

The Post-Classical and Medieval World

The Heian Period, 794 to 1185 CE, named for the new capital Heian-kyo (modern Kyoto), is widely regarded as the classical high point of Japanese imperial court culture, during which the aristocracy cultivated an elaborate courtly aesthetic in poetry, calligraphy, dress and ritual even as real political power gradually slipped from the emperor to the Fujiwara clan, who dominated the court for centuries as regents through marriage into the imperial line. The period produced two of the enduring landmarks of Japanese literature: Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji, often called the world's first novel, and Sei Shonagon's The Pillow Book, both written by court women in the newly developed kana phonetic script rather than classical Chinese. Beyond the capital, provincial military families were steadily accumulating land and armed retainers, developing the samurai warrior class that would eventually eclipse court authority entirely. The period ends with the Genpei War (1180-1185), in which the Minamoto clan defeated the rival Taira and established the first shogunate.
