The Classic Maya period was the era in which Maya civilization developed numerous interlinked city-states across the Maya lowlands, raising sculpted stone monuments dated by the Long Count calendar and reaching a peak of monumental construction, urbanism and intellectual and artistic achievement before a widespread ninth century political collapse in the central Maya region.
