The 1999 war in Dagestan, also known as the Dagestan incursions, began on 7 August 1999 when the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade, an Islamist militant group led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab based in Chechnya, invaded the neighboring Russian republic of Dagestan. The fighting, which also drew in local separatist rebels, lasted about five weeks and ended in a Russian victory that pushed the invading force back into Chechnya, setting the stage for the Second Chechen War later that year.
