Founding of the Northern Wei Dynasty

The Northern Wei dynasty was founded in 386 CE when Tuoba Gui, chieftain of the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei, a nomadic people from the Mongolian steppe, declared himself King of Dai and shortly afterward Emperor of Wei, reestablishing a state his ancestors had briefly ruled before it was destroyed by the Former Qin. Tuoba Gui and his successors gradually conquered rival warlord states across northern China through the early fifth century, and by 439 Emperor Taiwu had unified all of northern China under Northern Wei rule, ending the chaotic Sixteen Kingdoms period and inaugurating the Northern and Southern dynasties era. The dynasty is historically significant for its extensive sinicization policies, particularly under Emperor Xiaowen in the late fifth century, who moved the capital to Luoyang, mandated Chinese dress and language at court, and encouraged intermarriage between Xianbei and Han Chinese elites, a cultural fusion that shaped the ethnic and political character of the reunified China that followed under the Sui and Tang dynasties.
