The Haymarket affair was a bombing and its violent aftermath that followed a labor demonstration held on May 4, 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago. The rally had been called in support of a nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday and came a day after police killed two striking workers at the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company plant. When police moved to disperse the Haymarket meeting, an unknown person threw a bomb, and the blast and ensuing gunfire killed several people. Four convicted anarchists were executed on November 11, 1887, and the remaining defendants were pardoned by Governor John Peter Altgeld in 1893.
