The Soweto uprising was a series of protests led by black schoolchildren in South Africa that began on the morning of 16 June 1976 in the township of Soweto. The students were demonstrating against apartheid-era education policy, including a requirement to be taught in Afrikaans. Police opened fire on the demonstrators, and the unrest that followed over the next several days left more than 176 people dead and over a thousand injured.
