Emperors of Japan and monarchs of Korea's successive kingdoms and dynasties, including Japan's early empresses Suiko, Jito, Genmei, Gensho and Koken, the legendary Empress Jingu and the shamanic ruler Himiko of Wa, the shogunal founders Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu who held real power behind the imperial throne, and Emperor Meiji, whose reign opened Japan's modern era, together with Korean rulers from the Three Kingdoms period, Queen Seondeok and Queen Jindeok of Silla, through the later kingdoms, Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo and Sejong the Great of Joseon, Korea's most celebrated king. The group joins Japan and Korea together as this atlas's set of East Asian rulers outside China, since neither country alone has enough members in this subcategory to need its own separate first-level group.
