Rulers of the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mesoamerica and the Andes, including the Aztec emperors Moctezuma II and his successor Cuauhtemoc, who led resistance to the Spanish conquest, the poet-king Nezahualcoyotl of Texcoco, the Inca emperors Pachacuti and Topa Inca Yupanqui, whose reigns built and expanded the Inca imperial system, Atahualpa, the last independent Inca emperor, and Maya queens known from inscriptions at their own cities: Lady K'abel of El Peru-Waka, Ix Yohl Ik'nal of Palenque and Lady Six Sky of Naranjo. The group covers both Mesoamerica and the Andes together as the atlas's set of pre-Columbian American rulers, since neither region alone has enough members in this subcategory to need its own separate group.
