Sub-Saharan African Kingdoms

Historical kingdoms of sub-Saharan Africa, spanning the Horn of Africa's Kingdom of Aksum, the Nile valley's Kingdom of Kush, the West African kingdoms of Dahomey, Benin, Nri and the Senegambian Wolof and Serer kingdoms of Cayor, Baol, Waalo, Sine and Saloum and the federation of Kaabu, the Hausa city kingdoms of Katsina, Zazzau, Gobir and Kebbi, the Central African kingdoms of Kongo, Loango and Ndongo and Matamba, the African Great Lakes kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Ankole, Rwanda and Burundi, the southern African Zulu Kingdom and Kingdom of Zimbabwe, and Madagascar's Kingdom of Imerina. A kingdom is placed here by its own territory sitting south of the Sahara, distinguishing this group from the separate North Africa and Middle East group, which holds Egypt's Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Vandal Kingdom of North Africa specifically.
