The Atlantic Charter was a joint statement issued on 14 August 1941 setting out American and British goals for the world after the end of World War II, months before the United States officially entered the war. It outlined aims including no territorial gains against the wishes of the people affected, restoration of self-government to those deprived of it, reduced trade restrictions, freedom from fear and want, freedom of the seas, and disarmament of aggressor nations. Its adherents signed the Declaration by United Nations on 1 January 1942, which became the basis for the modern United Nations.
