The Entente Cordiale was a series of agreements signed on April 8, 1904 between the United Kingdom and France that resolved a range of long standing colonial disputes and markedly improved relations between the two countries. It recognized Egypt as within Britain's sphere of influence and Morocco within France's, settled French fishing rights off the coast of Newfoundland, adjusted colonial boundaries in West Africa, and demarcated zones of influence in Siam, Madagascar and the New Hebrides. Though not a formal military alliance, it ended centuries of intermittent Anglo-French rivalry and drew the two powers together in the face of a rising Germany, whose subsequent provocations over Morocco further reinforced the new partnership. The agreement laid the diplomatic groundwork for British and French cooperation in the First World War.
