The Jay Treaty, formally the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America, was signed in 1794 between the United States and Great Britain. It averted a renewed war between the two countries, resolved issues left unsettled since the 1783 Treaty of Paris, and opened a decade of peaceful trade between Americans and the British while the French Revolutionary Wars raged in Europe. Its terms were designed on the American side by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton with the support of President George Washington, and ratification angered France and bitterly divided American public opinion, feeding the growth of the pro-treaty Federalist and anti-treaty Democratic-Republican parties.
