Lateran Treaty

Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Lateran Treaty was one component of the Lateran Pacts of 1929, agreements between the Kingdom of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel III and Duce Benito Mussolini and the Holy See under Pope Pius XI that settled the long-standing Roman Question. The treaty recognized Vatican City as an independent state under the sovereignty of the Holy See, and Italy agreed to give the Catholic Church financial compensation for the loss of the Papal States. In 1948, the treaty was recognized in the Constitution of Italy as governing relations between the Italian Republic and the Catholic Church, and though it was significantly revised in 1984, ending Catholicism's status as Italy's sole state religion, Vatican City remains a distinct sovereign state today. The treaty and its associated pacts are named for the Lateran Palace, where they were signed on February 11, 1929, and the Italian Parliament ratified them on June 7, 1929.
