The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, opened for signature in 1968 and entered into force in 1970, commits its nuclear-armed parties not to transfer nuclear weapons technology to other states and commits non-nuclear parties not to acquire it, while guaranteeing access to peaceful nuclear technology and committing all parties to pursue eventual disarmament. It has become the most widely joined arms control agreement in history, underpinning the international nonproliferation regime for decades afterward.
