The Treaty of Campo Formio, signed on 17 October 1797 by Napoleon Bonaparte for France and representatives of the Austrian Habsburg monarchy, ended the War of the First Coalition. Austria ceded the Austrian Netherlands to France and recognized French-dominated republics in Italy and the Rhineland, while the ancient Republic of Venice was dissolved and partitioned between France and Austria. The treaty confirmed Napoleon's rise as the dominant figure shaping the settlement of revolutionary-era Europe.
