The Treaty of Karlowitz was signed on January 26, 1699, in the town of Karlowitz in the Habsburg Military Frontier, concluding the Great Turkish War of 1683 to 1699, in which the Ottoman Empire was defeated by the Holy League after its loss at the Battle of Zenta. The settlement marked the end of Ottoman control over much of central Europe and established Habsburg dominance in the region in its place.
