The Treaty of Turkmenchay, signed in February 1828, ended the Russo-Persian War of 1826 to 1828 between the Russian Empire and Qajar Persia. Persia ceded the khanates of Erivan and Nakhchivan to Russia, fixed the Aras River as the new border, and granted Russian subjects extraterritorial legal privileges within Persian territory. The treaty completed Russia's absorption of the South Caucasus territories that had begun with the earlier Treaty of Gulistan.
