The Truman Doctrine is a United States foreign policy that pledged American support for nations aligned with the United States against alleged authoritarian threats, originating with the goal of countering the growth of the Soviet bloc during the Cold War. It was announced to Congress by President Harry Truman on 12 March 1947 and developed further on 4 July 1948, when Truman pledged to oppose the communist rebellions in Greece and Soviet demands on Turkey. It led to the formation of NATO in 1949, and historians often date the start of the Cold War to Truman's March 1947 speech to Congress.
