The Charter of the United Nations, also called the UN Charter, is the founding treaty of the United Nations. It establishes the organization's purposes, governing structure, and overall framework, including its principal organs: the Secretariat, the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Trusteeship Council. It is a major part of public international law and underlies much of the law governing the use of force, the peaceful settlement of disputes, arms control, and the maintenance of international peace and security.
