Ahmed III

Ahmed III was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire and a son of Sultan Mehmed IV and his consort Gulnus Sultan, an ethnic Greek originally named Evmania Voria; he was born at Hacioglu Pazarcik in Dobruja and succeeded to the throne in 1703 upon the abdication of his brother Mustafa II. From 1718 to 1730, a period known as the Tulip Era, the government was directed by Nevsehirli Damat Ibrahim Pasha and Ahmed's daughter Fatma Sultan, Ibrahim Pasha's wife. Early in his reign he worked to appease the janissaries who had elevated him to power, and his grand vizier Corlulu Ali Pasha reorganized the treasury and provided administrative stability; Ahmed himself was an avid reader skilled in calligraphy and versed in history and poetry.
