Archimedes

Philosophers and Scholars

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287-212 BCE) was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer and inventor from Syracuse in Sicily. Though few details of his life survive, his mathematical writings show him deriving results on the area of a circle, the surface area and volume of a sphere, and the area under a parabola using methods that anticipated modern calculus. He is also credited with inventions including the Archimedes screw and with principles of buoyancy and mechanical leverage discovered through his study of levers and floating bodies. He is considered one of the leading scientists and one of the greatest mathematicians of classical antiquity, killed during the Roman siege of Syracuse.
