Charles IV was Holy Roman Emperor from 1355 until his death in 1378. He was elected King of Germany in 1346 and became King of Bohemia that same year. He belonged to the House of Luxembourg through his father and the Bohemian House of Premysl through his mother, and emphasized the Bohemian side of his inheritance throughout his life, in part because his direct ancestors in the Premyslid line included two saints.

What was the Golden Bull of Charles IV?
A series of ordinances of 1355 and 1356 that stabilized the privileges of the electors.
The Golden Bull was a series of ordinances that Charles IV issued at the imperial diets of Nuremberg and Metz in 1355 and 1356. It stabilized the privileges of the electors and gave them virtual independence from imperial authority. Charles intended the electors to become the basis of a stronger empire, but hostility from those envious of the electors, and from his Wittelsbach and Habsburg rivals, kept him from contributing much toward a real reform of German government.
