FAQs

Why did Charles the Bald's birth lead to civil war among his father's sons?

Lands granted to Charles in 829 upset the settlement of 817 and set off civil wars among Louis the Pious's sons, ending with the Treaty of Verdun in 843.

Charles was the son of Louis the Pious by his second wife, Judith. In 829 Louis granted the young Charles lands, and that grant upset the succession settlement of 817, the Ordinatio imperii, which had guaranteed rights to the three sons of Louis's first marriage: Lothair I, Louis the German and Pippin I. The grant set off a series of civil wars that lasted until 838. After Louis died in 840 the fighting resumed, and it ended only when Louis the German joined Charles to force Lothair to accept the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which gave Charles the western lands.
