George II was King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 1727 until his death in 1760. Born and raised in northern Germany, he is the most recent British monarch born outside Great Britain, and he married Princess Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, with whom he had eight children. His father became King George I in 1714, and George himself exercised little control over British domestic policy as king, which was largely governed by the Parliament of Great Britain, though as Elector of Hanover he had more direct control over policy there. During the War of the Austrian Succession he took part in the Battle of Dettingen, becoming the most recent British monarch to lead an army in battle, and in 1745 supporters of the Stuart claimant James attempted and failed to depose him in the Jacobite rising led by James's son. His eldest son Frederick died before him in 1751, and George was succeeded on his death in 1760 by Frederick's eldest son, George III.
