FAQs

Why did Joseph I having no surviving son matter for the Habsburg succession?

Joseph left no surviving son. A pact he and his brother Charles signed put his daughters ahead of Charles's daughters and made no provision for Maria Theresa.

Joseph married Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1699 and they had three children, but their only son died of hydrocephalus before his first birthday. Joseph also caught a sexually transmittable disease, probably syphilis, which he passed on to his wife and which rendered her sterile, so there was no new heir. Joseph's father, Leopold I, who was still alive, made Joseph and his brother Charles sign the Mutual Pact of Succession, under which Joseph's daughters would have precedence over Charles's daughters if neither man fathered a son. That arrangement made no provision for the accession of Charles's daughter Maria Theresa, and the source states that it led to the War of the Austrian Succession.
