Also Known As Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, Prince of Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein · Prince Metternich
Statesmen and Political Leaders

Klemens von Metternich, who lived from 1773 to 1859, was an Austrian statesman and diplomat, born into the House of Metternich, who rose through the diplomatic ranks to become one of the most influential political figures in nineteenth century Europe, serving as Austrian foreign minister from 1809 to 1848 and as chancellor of the Austrian Empire from 1821 to 1848. His most celebrated achievement came as leader of Austria's delegation at the Congress of Vienna from 1814 to 1815, the conference that reorganized Europe after the defeat of Napoleon, where his skillful negotiation secured territorial gains for Austria, including Lombardy-Venetia in Italy, while working to prevent any single power from again dominating the continent. He went on to champion the Concert of Europe, a system of regular diplomatic congresses among the major powers intended to preserve peace and suppress revolutionary movements, a mechanism that helped maintain relative stability across Europe for several decades. A committed conservative representing the interests of the old aristocratic order, Metternich is credited by historians with helping prevent major wars through sustained diplomatic mediation, even as critics have argued that his consistent opposition to liberal and nationalist reform ultimately weakened the Austrian Empire's long-term position. He was forced to resign and flee Vienna during the revolutions of 1848, which swept away much of the conservative order he had spent decades building.

FAQs

What were the Carlsbad Decrees and why did Metternich want them?

Measures of 1819 against the student movement, which Metternich saw as a threat to the Vienna settlement.

The Carlsbad Decrees were measures against the German student movement, approved by the Federal Diet in 1819. The Austrian chancellor Metternich saw the student movement as a serious threat to the restoration order established at Vienna, and the assassination of the conservative playwright August von Kotzebue by the student Karl Sand on 23 March 1819 gave the effort its pretext. The Federal Diet finally repealed the decrees in April 1848.
