Why did Leopold I spend so much of his reign at war with the Ottomans and France?
He faced the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683 and then the dispute with France over the Spanish succession.
Leopold I reigned from 1658 to 1705, and Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the reign as a series of struggles with the Turks and the French from which Austria emerged as a great European power. The Ottoman struggle came first: in 1683 the Turks appeared before Vienna, and the city suffered its second Turkish siege. The French conflict grew out of the Spanish succession. When the childless Charles II of Spain died in 1700, the Spanish throne and holdings passed by bequest to Philippe, duc d'Anjou, a grandson of Louis XIV of France. Leopold held that the Spanish heritage had to be defended by force of arms, and he died in 1705, in the middle of the War of the Spanish Succession.
