Why was Lothair III crowned emperor in the Lateran rather than at St. Peter's?
Because Anacletus II, one of two rival popes, held St. Peter's, the coronation of 4 June 1133 was held in the Lateran Basilica.
A disputed papal election in 1130 split the cardinals between Innocent II and Anacletus II, and both claimed to have been legally elected. Anacletus controlled St. Peter's, so when Lothair reached Rome his imperial coronation took place in the Lateran Basilica on 4 June 1133. Both popes had offered him the imperial crown. Anacletus found support only from Roger II of Sicily, while Innocent won the backing of the kings of France and England with the help of Bernard of Clairvaux.
