Arcadius

Arcadius, who lived from around 377 to 1 May 408, served as Roman emperor of the eastern empire from 383 until his death, the eldest child of Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla and the brother of Honorius, who ruled the western portion. He was co-ruler with his father from 19 January 383 and became senior eastern emperor on 17 January 395, ruling until his death; his wife was Aelia Eudoxia, and their children included Pulcheria and his successor Theodosius II. He was widely seen as a weak ruler dominated by a series of powerful ministers and by his wife; the historian J. B. Bury described him as of short stature and dark complexion, noted for the dullness of his wit, and inevitably governed by the strong personalities around him. Arcadius was buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.
