Bayezid I

Bayezid I, known as Bayezid the Thunderbolt, was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1389 to 1402 and adopted the title Sultan-i Rum. He unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople in 1394 and defeated a crusading army at the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, then conquered and vassalized the whole of Anatolia by subduing the Anatolian beyliks. A renewed siege of Constantinople in 1402 was broken off by the invasion of the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur, who defeated and captured Bayezid at the Battle of Ankara that year; he died in captivity in 1403, triggering the Ottoman Interregnum among his sons.
