Andronikos III Palaiologos, commonly Latinized Andronicus III Palaeologus, was Byzantine emperor from 1328 to 1341, the son of Michael IX Palaiologos and Rita of Armenia. Proclaimed co-emperor in his youth before 1313, he rebelled against his grandfather Andronikos II Palaiologos in April 1321, was formally crowned co-emperor in February 1325, and went on to oust his grandfather outright, becoming sole emperor on 24 May 1328.

Why did Andronikos III go to war against his own grandfather?
He had caused his brother's death and was disowned by his grandfather Andronikos II.
Andronikos III had caused the death of his brother, and his grandfather, the emperor Andronikos II, disowned him over it. With the support of his friend John Kantakouzenos and a younger generation of aristocrats, Andronikos then fought a war of about seven years against his grandfather. He won it, was crowned, and became sole emperor in 1328. Historians count this as the first of the damaging civil wars that troubled Byzantium in the fourteenth century.
