Historical Figure
Nabonidus
Also Known As Nabu-naid Akkadian native-language form of the name, meaning May Nabu be exalted.
Monarchs and Rulers
Nabonidus, whose name means May Nabu be exalted, was the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, ruling from 556 BC until Babylon fell to the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great in 539 BC. He was the final native ruler of ancient Mesopotamia, marking the end of thousands of years of Sumero-Akkadian states and empires in the region. Scholars regard him as an unorthodox religious reformer, sometimes called the first archaeologist for his interest in the region's ancient past, and he is noted for an unusual personal devotion to the moon god Sin that came at the expense of Babylon's traditional patron deity, Marduk. His reign ended with Cyrus the Great's conquest of Babylon in 539 BC; ancient sources suggest Cyrus spared him and possibly exiled him to Carmania.
