Constantine IX Monomachos reigned as Byzantine emperor from June 1042 to January 1055. A member of the urban aristocracy rather than the old military nobility, he became emperor through his 1042 marriage to the reigning empress Zoe Porphyrogenita. He shared the throne with Zoe and with her sister, Theodora Porphyrogenita, and his energetic rule is counted among the most consequential of the empire's turbulent eleventh century.
