W. G. Grace

Also Known As WG · William Gilbert Grace
Sports Pioneers and Innovators

W. G. Grace (1848-1915) was an English cricketer widely regarded as one of the sport's most important figures in transforming it from a gentleman's pastime into a mass spectator game during the second half of the nineteenth century. A physically dominant all-rounder who could bat, bowl and field at a standard well beyond his contemporaries, he scored more than 54,000 runs and took over 2,800 wickets across a first-class career spanning more than four decades, while also practicing as a country doctor for much of that time. His enormous public following drew paying crowds to matches on a scale English cricket had not previously seen, and his aggressive, front-foot batting technique influenced how the game was played for generations afterward. He captained England in the first Test matches played on English soil against Australia.

FAQs

Was W. G. Grace really an amateur?

Not in practice, since he accepted large sums to endorse commercial products.

In practice, hardly. Grace worked as a country doctor, but cricket was his main occupation: he trained for hours for matches and traveled to sporting venues, and he was known to accept large sums of money to endorse commercial products. In the genteel sport of cricket, this made him an anomaly. His presence also drew crowds, and the usual three-pence admission price was sometimes doubled when he played.
