The African Independence Era

The Contemporary World

The African Independence Era, generally dated from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s, refers to the period in which the great majority of Africa's colonial territories achieved political independence from European rule, transforming the continent's political map within roughly a single generation after centuries of colonization. Libya (1951), Ghana under Kwame Nkrumah (1957, the first Black African colony to gain independence) and a wave of French and British territories across 1960, remembered as the "Year of Africa" when seventeen African nations became independent, mark the era's early and central phase, achieved through a mix of negotiated transfers of power and, in cases including Algeria's brutal war against France (1954-1962) and Kenya's Mau Mau uprising against Britain, prolonged armed struggle. Portugal held onto its African territories longest among the European colonial powers, and Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau did not achieve independence until 1974-75, following the collapse of Portugal's own dictatorship. The new states inherited colonial-era borders and institutions poorly matched to Africa's underlying ethnic and political geography, a legacy that shaped many of the continent's post-independence conflicts and governance challenges in the decades that followed.
