The Kangxi Emperor (1654-1722) was the fourth emperor of China's Qing dynasty, reigning from 1661 to 1722, the longest reign of any Chinese emperor in history at 61 years. Coming to the throne as a child, he later took personal control of government, suppressed the Revolt of the Three Feudatories that threatened the young dynasty, and extended Qing control over Taiwan, Mongolia and parts of Central Asia. His reign is remembered as a period of consolidation and cultural flourishing, during which he sponsored major scholarly projects, including the Kangxi Dictionary, still an important reference work for Chinese characters. Along with his grandson the Qianlong Emperor, his rule is often considered part of a high point of Qing dynasty power and stability known as the High Qing era.

What set off the Revolt of the Three Feudatories against the Kangxi Emperor?
The emperor's 1673 signal that he would accept one feudatory prince's retirement.
The revolt began in 1673, when the Kangxi Emperor signaled that he was willing to accept the retirement of one of the feudatory princes. These princes were former Chinese allies of the Manchus who had been reluctant to give up their positions in South China, and the most famous of them was Wu Sangui, who had built his own independent regime across much of southwestern and central China. Some of the emperor's cautious colleagues advised against the move. The fighting that followed threw all of China south of the Yangtze River into civil war, and it ended only after Wu Sangui died of dysentery in 1678.
