John II Komnenos, also rendered Comnenus and known as John the Beautiful or John the Good, was Byzantine emperor from 1118 to 1143. The eldest son of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos and Irene Doukaina, he was the second emperor of the Komnenian restoration and, having been born to a reigning emperor, held the status of porphyrogennetos. A pious and dedicated monarch, he was determined to undo the damage his empire had suffered half a century earlier at the Battle of Manzikert.
