Mehmed III was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1595 until his death in 1603. Known for ordering the execution of his brothers, he personally led the army to victory at the Battle of Keresztes during the Long Turkish War, though that win was offset by losses at Gyor and Nikopol, and he oversaw the successful suppression of the Jelali rebellions. He also corresponded with the court of Elizabeth I of England over stronger commercial ties and a hoped-for alliance against Spain.
