Mehmed IV

Mehmed IV, nicknamed Mehmed the Hunter, was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1648 to 1687, coming to the throne at age six after his father was overthrown in a coup. He became the second longest reigning sultan in Ottoman history after Suleiman the Magnificent; his early and late years were marked by military defeat and political instability, but his middle years saw the empire's fortunes revive under the Koprulu era statesmen, and under his reign the empire reached its greatest territorial extent in Europe. Known by contemporaries as a devout ruler and gazi for his role in many conquests, he was overthrown by soldiers disillusioned with the ongoing War of the Holy League in 1687 and retired to Edirne, where he died of natural causes in 1693.
